Applications are now open for grants to support ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and organisations to undertake cultural learning, study and leadership training.
Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs Rachel Stephen-Smith said the $220,000 grants program was part of the ACT Government’s wider commitment to the delivering on the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Agreement 2019-2028.
“These grants enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to pursue their aspirations through lifelong learning, cultural practices and fostering leadership within the community,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.
“The program forms part of the Government’s ongoing work to recognise and support the strength of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
“Previous grants have supported projects that tell the true history of our region and the contemporary experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Canberrans, produced resources to share culture and helped develop First Nations leadership and scholarship in a vast array of fields. I look forward to seeing how the community makes use of the grants this year.”
Cultural Grants: support Cultural Integrity, the aspirations of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and contributes to the building of respectful, fair and sustainable communities. Individuals can apply for up to $5,000 and organisations can apply for up to $10,000.
Leadership Grants: support Community Leadership, where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a strong voice, are decision makers on issues that impact them and lead in the achievement of positive life outcomes. Individuals can apply for up to $5,000 and organisations can apply for up to $10,000.
Scholarship Grants: support the Lifelong Learning, where respect is given to preserving the world’s oldest living cultures which enhances social inclusion and empowers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to engage in lifelong learning and positive generational experiences. Individuals can apply for up to $5,000.
Applications can be submitted at any time and will initially be assessed in two tranches, with closing dates in November 2021 and February 2022.
