Next phase of Canberra Hospital Master Plan

Released 23/02/2024

The ACT Government is taking the next step in delivering a modern and accessible Canberra Hospital campus with demolition work beginning on Building 23.

The demolition of Building 23 and the adjacent Building 6 will make way for a new state-of-the art facility for pathology and other clinical services.

Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the new building is an early priority of the Canberra Hospital Master Plan, which will continue to transform the campus over the next 20 years.

“The Canberra Hospital Master Plan sets out how the ACT Government will deliver new and upgraded facilities across the Canberra Hospital campus,” said Minister Stephen-Smith.

“Tens of thousands of people work, receive care, and visit the Canberra Hospital every year. The Master Plan will ensure the campus that is accessible, welcoming and better connected."

Multiplex will be undertaking the demolition work for Building 23 and will then progress to the demolition of Building 6.

Demolition work is expected to take several months and is projected to be completed in quarter three of 2024.

“The demolition of Building 23 is one of many projects happening across the Canberra Hospital campus, including the new Cancer Research Centre and the recently completed expansion of the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children,” said Minister Stephen-Smith.

“The new Critical Services Building will open later this year and we are progressing plans for the new northside hospital and community-based health centres. The ACT Government will continue to invest in modern, purpose-built health infrastructure across the ACT."
