New project helps Canberrans ‘Make the Move’ to clean transport

Released 26/05/2021

A new program will give local businesses the tools and knowledge to ‘Make the Move’ to zero emissions transport, building on the ACT’s position as the national leader in clean, green transport.

Minister for Emissions Reduction Shane Rattenbury said the program, delivered by the Conservation Council ACT Region and the Canberra Environment Centre, will help the community make real change to reduce emissions.

“Now that the ACT has shifted to 100% renewable electricity, transport emissions are by far the ACT’s biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions, at over 60%,” Minister Rattenbury said.

“That’s why we have a strong focus on shifting to zero-emission transport, including active travel and zero emissions vehicles.

“The Make the Move project will run a six-week support program for workplaces to enable employees to trial active travel for commuting to and from work, as well as travelling for work meetings or events. Participating businesses will receive tailored workshops for their workplace, as well as the use of electric bikes and scooters.

“E-bikes have been provided to Truefitt & Hill, Annex, Early Childhood Australia, and Icon Water for their staff to trial and document their experiences, providing valuable information on the benefits, challenges and avoided emissions.

“The project also includes a new website with a wide range of publicly available information to help Canberrans make sustainable transport choices by modelling the financial and environmental benefits of these choices based on real-life case studies.

“Expert advice will also be provided to businesses on how they can further support their employees’ sustainable transport choices. This includes advice on areas such as vehicle charging, storage and improved end of trip facilities.

“Having the right tools and knowledge available for our community to make informed choices is central to our success in reducing emissions. Projects such as this demonstrate the importance of community-led solutions in addressing climate change.”

The ‘Make the Move’ project was supported by the ACT Government Zero Emissions grant program with $39,572 in funding in 2020. Over four years, more than $550,000 in funding has been provided to 23 individual projects as part of the government’s grant program.
