ACT small businesses can now access rebates of up to $10,000 to help transition their workplaces and work practices away from fossil-fuel gas to efficient electric appliances.
Minister for Water, Energy and Emissions Reduction, Shane Rattenbury said the rebates will support businesses to be more sustainable, in reducing both their emissions and operating costs.
“The vast majority of Canberra businesses are small, family-owned enterprises employing fewer than 20 people. We want to support these local employers to make their workplaces more comfortable and energy-efficient, cutting costs and emissions, which benefits the entire community,” Minister Rattenbury said.
“Switching to high efficiency electric appliances will make these businesses more sustainable, both environmentally and in helping businesses save money on their overhead costs, particularly if they install solar panels or choose zero-emissions vehicles for their fleet.
“The new rebate is available for small to medium businesses, to upgrade to efficient electric appliances and switch off fossil-fuel gas. Local businesses can now access up to $10,000 in rebates which can pay for up to half of the upfront cost of upgrading.
“Along with the new rebate, the government’s Sustainable Business Program provides free, expert advice to help businesses identify areas for improvement and take action in the smartest, most cost-effective way. Research has identified that providing information is an important part of removing barriers for small business operators.
“Taking steps now to improve sustainability will deliver benefits to individual Canberra businesses and to our broader community,” said Minister Rattenbury.
“The Downer Community Centre is an example of the impact the rebate will have. They’re using the rebate to replace gas heating with efficient reverse cycle heating. This will help them save $1900 per year in bills and 2 tonnes per year of CO2 emissions.
ACT businesses with fewer than 20 employees are eligible for up to $10,000 in support through energy efficiency rebates. The maximum rebate for electric-to-electric upgrades is $5,000 (incl GST), while fossil-fuel gas-to-electric upgrade rebates are capped at $10,000 (incl GST).
