Notice issued in response to Braddon safety incident

Released 31/01/2019

WorkSafe ACT will today issue a Prohibition Notice on Chase Building Group in response to an incident in which a concrete panel fell from the site yesterday.

The Notice relates to some areas of the site not having the adequate number of areas of access and egress on a number of levels and non-compliant scaffolding.

WorkSafe ACT inspectors were on the site until late last night and most of today, gathering evidence and supporting safety.

Planning is now underway for the safe removal of the fallen panel from the neighbouring smash repair business.

This business has been able to return to operations with temporary amenities provided on the site.

ACT Work Safety Commissioner Greg Jones said that the non-disturbance notice was expected to be lifted tomorrow. The investigation remained ongoing and further regulatory action would be considered as it progressed.

Mr Jones said reports of non-compliant scaffolding at the site was particularly troubling noting Worksafe’s ongoing and intensive focus on scaffolding and working at heights in the construction sector.

“This matter will be looked at closely as part of the investigation and I’d encourage all industry to thoroughly check their scaffolding to ensure that it fully is compliant and safe,” he said.

An exclusion zone remains in place at the site, but is impacting only the footpath area around the site. There are no major road impacts in the area at this time.
