Stromlo sportsgrounds takes first steps

Released 10/12/2020

The ACT Government has released a select tender to engage a consultant to prepare a preliminary design for the Stromlo District Playing Fields.

The successful tenderer will design and prepare costs for the playing fields. The designs will be based on feedback from sporting groups and will accommodate a range of sporting codes in the Molonglo region, as well as provide a space for the whole community to enjoy.

Construction of the playing fields will be staged. The ACT Government has committed $15 million initially to deliver at least two playing fields, training lights, a pavilion and parking infrastructure.

These playing fields are part of the ACT Government’s Stromlo Forest Park Masterplan and Active 2020 Strategy. The preliminary designs and cost plan are due to be complete by mid-2021.

This government has a strong record of supporting participation at all levels of sport and providing facilities for the community to come together.

Stromlo Forest Park in the Molonglo region is fast becoming a sport and recreation hub and the gateway for mountain bike riding in Canberra. Earlier in the year the park opened 4km’s of tracks and trails and is also waiving hire fees and charges until March 2021 to help the community through COVID-19.

The popular Stromlo Leisure Centre which opened in August 2020 has already seen more than 87,000 visitors through the doors, nearly 1,600 memberships and 1,200 enrolments in learn to swim classes. A new large scoreboard was installed in the pool this week for swimming and water polo competitions.

On track to open its doors in 2021 is the newest public school in Molongo, Evelyn Scott School. Once complete, the new school will include a large community room and kitchenette, multipurpose gym, sports courts and change-room facilities, outdoor playing field suitable for soccer, rugby league and rugby union, outdoor multipurpose hardcourts and cricket nets.

The ACT Government is investing approximately $4 million to deliver the gymnasium which is expected to be completed in mid-2021. This will be a significant community and sporting facility including two full sized courts with line markings for roller derby and other sports such as basketball, futsal or indoor soccer, netball, volleyball and badminton, seating and additional space for community storage.

The ACT Government is also continuing to waive hiring fees for sportsgrounds across Canberra until 31 March 2021 as part of the government’s economic recovery support for community groups.
