Community to choose name and uniform of Throsby’s new school

Released 07/10/2021

I am pleased to announce the community can choose their preference for the name and uniform for the new preschool to year 6 school in Throsby which will open its doors for students in 2022.

Schools are the centre of our local communities, which is why we’re inviting local children, families, teachers, community organisations and the broader Canberra community to vote for their preferred name and uniform option for Canberra’s newest school. You can do this by visiting the YourSay Conversations website.

The name of the new school will be selected from a shortlist of distinguished Australians whose contribution is related to the suburb theme of Throsby. These names were shortlisted by the Place Names Committee following consultation with the Office of the Surveyor-General and Land Information and families of the nominees. These Australians are:

  • Clifford ‘Possum’ Tjapaltjarri
  • John Calaby
  • Shirley Jeffrey
  • Charles Throsby

The school uniform will be chosen from four design concepts which are based on the natural habitat of the region.

Every ACT public school is a great school, and this $43 million P to 6 school will accommodate 132 preschool students and 450 Kindergarten to Year 6 students with space available for future student growth, ensuring every young person can attend a great public school close to home. It will also be the ACT’s third zero-emissions school, building on this Government’s commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2045.

The school’s foundation principal, Annamaria Zuffo, has been appointed and is looking forward to establishing a collaborative place of learning where students, staff and community can build a vision for the future and where all students are welcomed and successful.

Like all ACT public schools, the new school in Throsby will deliver the Australian Curriculum, with specific facilities to enrich learning in the arts, music, and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM), ensuring it equips students for the best possible future.

As well as providing for the educational needs of our young people, schools are also important hubs for the local community and provide facilities for many local clubs and groups. The new school in Throsby will be the first community facility for the area and will include a large community room and kitchenette, multipurpose double gym, sports courts, and change-room facilities, as well as an outdoor turf sports field and outdoor multipurpose hard courts for everyone to enjoy.

This is another example of the ACT Government investing in our schools and community infrastructure.

I look forward to Canberra’s 90th public school opening its doors for the 2022 school year.
