Construction starts for Canberra's newest northside high school

Released 19/11/2021

The ACT Government is delivering on its commitment to ensure every young person has a place at a great local public school.

Construction is starting for Canberra’s newest public high school in the East Gungahlin suburb of Kenny. The new school is due to open for the 2023 school year and will cater for 800 students from years 7 to 10.

Gungahlin continues to be one of the fastest growing regions in Australia and more local families are choosing public education.

To support this growing demand, the ACT Government has invested $85.9 million to deliver the new public high school. The project will support more than 400 jobs.

The school will providing high quality learning environments, with both indoor and outdoor learning areas. The design also features integrated spaces to support students with specialised needs, in a modern and sustainable facility.

Public schools are valued community assets, and this new school will have the following facilities available for the community to use after school hours:

  • a double gymnasium with basketball, netball and volleyball markings
  • covered hard courts suitable for basketball or netball
  • an oval which can be used for soccer, rugby union and rugby league games and competitions
  • a multipurpose hall

The design of the school responds to the strong connections with the surrounding nature reserve and adjacent heritage track.

The ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on construction sites across the ACT has of course added to the complexity of this project. With Icon Construction now taking possession of the site, we are still on track to have the high school ready for 2023.

Next year, the community will have an opportunity to have their say on the name and logo for the school.

This is just another example of the ACT Government investing in infrastructure for our growing city.
