Evatt Primary School’s new café, the Nest, open to community

Released 09/06/2021

Evatt Primary School’s new café the Nest has officially opened to the community today. The Nest is a great example of a school building community partnerships and becoming a hub of their local community.

Evatt Primary School’s P&C received an ACT Government grant to help support parent engagement with the school. The school leads initiatives through The Nest, including a reading cafe each morning which provides as a space for families to participate in shared reading, strengthening the role of parents and carers as the first and most influential teacher in a child’s life.

The Nest is designed to be inviting and homely and is open for parents to use—whether that is extra help reading with their children or cooking in the kitchen.

Through The Nest, Evatt aims to expand opportunities in supporting vulnerable parents build their capacity as effective carers and members of the community and work to make the school available at more times so that families can utilise space in a safe and supportive environment.

Partners of The Nest include the University of Canberra, Libraries ACT, ACT Playgroups, Cyclabilities and Capital Regional Community Services.

The Nest also has significant support from the wider Belconnen and Canberra community, including Sauvage Urbain Kitchen Store, Three Mills Bakery, Assembly, Woolworths Charnwood, OZ Harvest, Ruby’s Cafe @ Evatt and the Lion’s Club (Belconnen Branch).

Through these key partnerships and supports, The Nest is already helping Evatt Primary School in becoming a community hub for learning, in line with the Future of Education Strategy.

The Nest was designed and constructed in partnership with the Evatt P&C and partly funded by an ACT Government Supporting Parent Engagement Grant.
