Four years of free Chromebooks

Released 04/02/2021

The ACT Government’s nation-leading investment in digital education enters its fourth year, continuing its commitment to providing public school students with equitable access to the tools they need for learning.

This week more than 3,000 ACT public secondary students will receive their first Chromebooks. These devices will support their access to technology for learning in an increasingly digital world.

The ACT Government has provided Chromebooks to every secondary public school student in Years 7 to 12 since February 2018, through a budget commitment of $18.8 million over four years.

The delivery of over 22,000 devices to secondary students since 2018 has delivered on the Government’s 2016 election commitment to increase access to technology to all ACT Government secondary school students by providing them with a device.

In addition to supporting new year 7 students, this year the Government will be refreshing almost 10,000 ACT public secondary students who received the first rollout of Chromebooks in 2018. This will ensure that their technology remains up to date and fit for purpose.

The ACT Government, through its Future of Education strategy, outlines its commitment to developing young people learn, think, create and work in an increasingly digital future.

Students need to be empowered with the knowledge, skills and confidence to learn with digital tools at school, at home, at work and in their communities.

ACT public schools also focus on educating students to be safe online to help them become good, and safe, digital citizens.

Chromebooks provide students with greater flexibility over how, where and when they learn which is more important than ever as we continue through COVID-19.
