Grants helping young Canberran’s connect with their community

Released 02/06/2021

Youth InterACT grants provide funding to help young people aged 12 to 25 develop and deliver new and innovative projects that lead to greater inclusion and participation in the ACT community.

‘Community’ hasa different meaning to everyone. These grants are available for the full spectrum of whatever community means to you. If you are, or you know someone, aged 12 to 25 with an idea to better connect young people across Canberra then apply for support through the Youth InterACT grants.

There are so many innovative, diverse and creative young people in Canberra, and so I’m sure there will be some great applications.

If you’re looking for some inspiration, in 2020, Lanyon High School students received a grant to create the Podcapsule project to capture the thoughts, feelings and experiences of young people in the unprecedented challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lanyon High School Youth Support Worker Gavin Smith said, “The Youth InterACT grant made it possible to sustain and equip the podcasting group to complete our ambitious Podcapsule endeavour and continue creating content that caters to our students’ interests. It promotes an authentic student voice and has proven to be a unique approach to engaging with students and creating positive connections.”

Some of the other initiatives that were made possible through 2020 Youth InterACT grants included:

  • a yarning and weaving project to build more meaningful connection between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students at Alfred Deakin High
  • a National Tree Day Planting project to get more young people involved with their local conservation organisations
  • a graffiti art project to promote positive messages of good health and wellbeing
  • a music program that allowed young musicians to collaborate and receive mentoring to pursue a sustainable career in music.

A total of $25,000 (GST exclusive) is available for individuals, groups, and organisations. Applications for the 2021-2022 Youth InterACT Grants are now open and close on Monday 19 July 2021.
