Urban Village coming to Molonglo Valley

Released 24/06/2021

Following successful community engagement, the Molonglo Valley is set to gain a vibrant village centre. Three prominent commercial sites off John Gorton Drive in Coombs will be transformed in response to community input and consultation.

“The ACT Government has listened to the Molonglo Valley community and their desire to see more retail, hospitality and community-focused facilities in the area. The Village Framework will create a buzzing suburban core and will be accompanied by a significant investment in offsite works, delivered by the Suburban Land Agency,” Minister for Housing and Suburban Development, Yvette Berry said.

“Works include reimagining Steve Irwin and Fred Daly Avenue as a village main street with multiple rows of shade trees, and a new public square which will become a community meeting and outdoor dining space. The works also include a small public pavilion, toilets and a performance space in the nearby Coombs Park which will be welcome additions to what is currently an underutilised space,” Minister Berry said.

The last commercial and mixed-use sites in Coombs and Wright will be released to market shortly through an Expression of Interest process, accompanied by the Coombs and Wright Village Design and Place Framework. The Place Framework is a formal document that locks in the layout, design, and connectivity on each of the blocks and mandates ground floor commercial floor space.

The Coombs and Wright Village Design and Place Framework allows the ACT Government to work in partnership with industry to deliver great developments that have a place and design led focus. It ensures great building design is embedded into the process.

In addition to the Framework and offsite works, a multi-storey community centre is proposed on the corner of Fred Daly Avenue and Beecroft Street, for use by community groups under the management of ACT Property Group.

A fourth site will be released via Tender to pave the way for an aged care facility. Situated off Harriott Street and Alex Colley Crescent in Wright, the site caters for both independent living units and aged care beds.
