Winanggaay; Forrest Primary’s new Indigenous Garden

Released 04/06/2021

Winanggaay means ‘Look, Listen, and Learn’ and it is the name of Forrest Primary Schools new Indigenous garden.

It was great to join with school staff, the builders and designers of the garden, local Elders, the P&C and school community, and all the students at Forrest Primary to open their new Indigenous Garden.

The Indigenous Garden features a variety of native plants and Indigenous designs. It can also be used as an outdoor learning space, or simply a place for students to sit and relax during break time.

The Indigenous Garden was funded primarily by the school community in recognition of the school’s 60th anniversary in 2018.

The development of this garden space was also supported by a number of ACT Government grants—a 2020 ACT Reconciliation Day Grant, a 2020 ACT Cultural Grant and a 2021 ACT Reconciliation Day Grant.

This garden is one of many across ACT Public Schools, each of which provides a great learning opportunity for the students.

Indigenous gardens are an example of implementing and embedding cultural integrity within ACT public schools – a key principle of the Future of Education Strategy.
