A new school on the books for a growing Canberra region

Released 31/03/2022

Hindmarsh Construction Australia has been appointed head contractor for phase one of the new school at Taylor in Canberra’s North.

Due to open in 2024, the facility will be built next to Margaret Hendry School in North Gungahlin and accommodate up to 800 high school students.

“Gungahlin continues to be one of the fastest growing regions in Australia and we know that more and more families are choosing public schools for their children’s education in the ACT,” said Minister for Education and Youth Affairs Yvette Berry.

“This investment will make sure that every family has access to a great local public school.”

“This state-of-the art building will form part of an $118 million investment from the ACT Government in the new Taylor High and Margaret Hendry school expansion – to ensure education services continue to grow with the region.”

The high school will offer general and specialist learning areas, small group programs, a library and an interactive learning centre. Sport and recreation spaces for students and the community will include a double gymnasium/hall, performing arts spaces and hardcourts.

The design is inspired by the seasonal changes of the surrounding grassy woodland landscape – with views of Ngunnawal Country framed through sculptural forms and openings throughout the school.

Hindmarsh Construction will also be the head contractor for the expansion of Margaret Hendry School, which will accommodate up to 600 additional preschool to year 6 students, with new learning communities ready for the 2023 school year.

The extension to the school’s administration building is already complete.

Margaret Hendry School’s new learning spaces will feature general learning settings, specialist learning settings including food technology, Science Technology Engineering Art and Maths (STEAM), and small group programs.

“I look forward to the completion of both the new high school in Taylor and the expansion of Margaret Hendry School as they deliver great education to more Gungahlin students,” said Minister Berry.
