Major funding boost for croquet in Canberra

Released 26/04/2022

Canberra’s only croquet club will under-go significant upgrades, after receiving one of this year’s Sport and Recreation Grants.

The $410,000 grant will fund much-needed improvements to access and amenities at the clubhouse, after it was damaged in the 2020 hail storm. The upgrades will include female friendly facilities, disability access, storage and safety improvements.

The Canberra Croquet Club currently has more than 120 members, with a growing waiting list.

“The planned improvements will allow this club to continue to support participation in the historic sport and hopefully host state and national activities in the future.” said Minister for Sport and Recreation Yvette Berry.

During the planning process the club has engaged with the National Capital Authority and ACT Heritage Council, to ensure the new build blends seamlessly with the existing heritage-listed clubhouse.

Work on the extension will commence immediately and is expected to be completed later this year.

“Canberra is an active city and it’s important that we support the community to maintain healthy, active, and inclusive lifestyles. The Sport and Recreation Grants Program is one way we are encouraging Canberrans to remain active, while providing economic stimulus and supporting jobs across the ACT.” said Minister Berry.
