Teaming up to get ACT primary school students moving

Released 10/06/2022

Five ACT public primary schools have partnered with the University of Canberra – for a special study on the benefits of physical education throughout children’s lives.

This research project - Quality Physical Education in Early Childhood using a Personalised System of Instruction – is being conducted collaboratively with Kaleen Primary School, Ainslie School, Giralang Primary School, Charles Conder Primary School and Southern Cross Early Childhood School.

The study involves students in years K-2 working with their teachers and a specialised physical education and health coach - on a weekly basis.

It’s part of the UC Affiliated Schools Program – which engages 26 public schools and draws upon leading practice nationally and internationally, tailored to the ACT.

“The UC Affiliated Schools Program is a key initiative under the ACT’s Future of Education Strategy, designed to further empower our experienced teachers and school leaders and to develop and support our preservice educators,” said Minister for Education and Youth Affairs, Yvette Berry.

The two-year collaboration is being led by Dr John Williams from the University of Canberra.

“Dr Williams and his team are bringing a lot of value to the teaching and enjoyment of physical education across the participating schools, which will benefit children throughout their lives,” said Minister Berry.

Quotes to be attributed to Assistant Professor Dr John Williams:

“The University of Canberra is pleased to collaborate with the ACT Government on this project, which is a potential game changer for how Physical Education, as a subject, can be taught in early childhood classes,” Dr John Williams said.

“The associated funding awarded to this project indicates that the Government recognises the value of Physical Education in the growth and all-round development of children in the school context.”
