The ACT Government’s first solar powered shipping container canteen has today, been turned on for players and spectators of Australian rules football at the Gordon district playing fields.
“This solar powered canteen facility is part of an exciting new way to enable users of sportsgrounds to have dedicated temporary facilities,” Minister for Sport and Recreation, Yvette Berry said.
“Equipped with six solar panels and a battery, the solar powered canteen generates 2.2 kilowatts of power to operate air conditioning, a fridge and lighting. The temporary and portable canteen will provide approximately 12 hours of run time, supporting a variety of sporting groups.
“It will be particularly welcomed by users of the Gordon district playing fields who recently had the pavilion severely damaged from vandalism and fire,” Ms Berry said.
Two other similar temporary facilities have recently been introduced to ACT Government sportsgrounds as solar powered change rooms. In February 2023 a solar powered shipping container change room was installed for players at Gordon and last week the Hall Bushrangers Rugby Union team benefited with a container installed at Hall sportsground.
“The new initiative to provide temporary and portable facilities with solar power provides players with comfort and convenience. The change rooms have space for storage with racks for bags, seating and lighting,” Ms Berry said.
“To help more sporting groups, the ACT Government is continuing to invest in similar solar powered shipping containers to be placed at other grounds where required. It is another example of how shipping containers these days can be so much more than just storage facilities and allow us to temporarily place them at grounds anywhere the sun shines,” Minister Berry said.
