The ACT Government is committed to making sure every young person has the best start to their education.
As part of the new Strong Foundations program, the ACT Government is providing grants to every public primary school to support the purchase of additional literacy and numeracy resources for students in preschool to year two.
These system-approved literacy and numeracy teaching materials and equipment, including decodable readers and mathematical resources, will see all public schools ready to start the 2025 school year.
“We know that we have the best teachers in the country, so we are backing them with the best literacy and numeracy resources,” Minister for Education Yvette Berry said.
“We also know that getting evidence-informed teaching right for students in the early years is so important for long-term success in school. These additional resources will enhance and improve the good work already happening in the classroom and add to that love of learning at a young age.”
All public primary schools will receive the additional funding this week to assist with the purchase of decodable readers, along with other evidence-informed literacy and numeracy resources.
“This funding boost gives our schools an opportunity to consider what additional resources they need to enhance their literacy and numeracy lessons. It also ensures parents can be confident their local school has the resources they need to provide evidence-informed literacy and numeracy education for our students,” Minister Berry said.
Teachers will be provided with training on how to use these resources in the classroom.
These resources will also complement the rollout of the Year 1 Phonics Check across ACT public schools in 2025.
