The ACT Government is delivering the infrastructure our growing city needs with a new competition half-pipe, or vert ramp, at the Belconnen skatepark now open to the community.
“This is part of our biggest ever program to improve suburban infrastructure across our city, with upgrades being carried out at local shops, playgrounds, dog parks and other community facilities,” said Minister for City Services, Tara Cheyne.
“The original Belconnen skatepark was built over 30 years ago and is considered Canberra’s best skatepark. It has attracted visitors from all over the world.
“The new seven metre tall half-pipe will only add to its appeal and attract new users. It will provide an exciting new space for Canberrans to be active and learn new skills – whether that be skateboarding, scooting or freestyle BMX.”
The half-pipe was built in sections which were transported to site and then craned into place and put together like a giant Meccano set.
The project also includes lighting, minor landscaping and two murals on the half-pipe. The first mural was painted by James Houlcroft who painted each pigeon headed figure to represent the spectrum of skaters who make the Canberra skateboarding community what it is today. Why pigeons? James was exploring the tendency for skaters and pigeons to be found in similar places which include public areas full of concrete and corners.
The second mural was painted by Eddie Mo in collaboration with Paul Licayan, known as ‘PAW’ in the street art world, whose mural replicates the shape and style of the underside of a skateboard. This mural represents the culture and history of the Belconnen skatepark, where the popular graffiti and street culture practice of decorating the underside of a board is popular.
“One of the best parts of this exciting new facility is that it will be able to hold both amateur and professional skating competitions.
“The skatepark scene is very popular in Canberra and I hope this encourages more of the community to get out and give something new a try. It’s also a great way to stay warm in winter,” concluded Minister Cheyne.
“Today is a big day for Canberra’s skateboarding and BMX community. It has been great to work with them to design and deliver the half-pipe,” said Minister for Sport and Recreation Yvette Berry.
“It’s great to see their advocacy come to life. As our city and the popularity of skateboarding and BMX grows, it’s important for us to support these sports.”
