Calls received on air

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: The caller rang to request a tourist ‘street’ sign on Constitution Avenue in Reid pointing to St John Baptist Church. The caller said that the church is a very historic church and it attracts a lot of visitors however it cannot be readily seen on Constitution Avenue. The caller also said she requested a sign for the Country Women’s Association on Northbourne Avenue, but the request was refused.

Response: The Chief Minister said that we will have to talk to the NCA regarding the sign on Constitution Avenue as it is a part of the Parliamentary Triangle. The Chief Minister also said we’ll have pursue the sign for the CWA on Northbourne Avenue.

OUTCOME: A TCCS officer contacted the caller advising that their enquiry for St John Baptist Church has been referred to the National Capital Authority for further action. The enquiry for CWA on Northbourne Avenue will be reassessed if the criteria are met, after a request had initially been declined in 2013. At this time it didn’t comply with TCCS’ polices.

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: The caller rang regarding the dog park in Duffy. The caller said that there have been people doing the wrong thing there by dumping rubbish and drivers doing donuts. The caller said she has contacted ACT Policing but has had no luck with them.

Response: The Chief Minister said he will get a team out on site just to look at what sort of practical measures we can take especially regarding the donuts. That is something we would want to both discourage and make practically impossible in that context. Regarding the littering and dumping it is illegal activity, and if it's happening regularly, then we can see what we can do to catch someone in the act.

OUTCOME: A TCCS officer contacted the caller to advise that TCCS are aware of the illegal dumping that has been occurring at this location. TCCS have been taking steps to reduce the screening vegetation and limit vehicle access. It is hoped that once the dog park is operational, the increase in visitation to the area will become a deterrent for these kinds of activities. TCCS will continue to monitor and take appropriate action where needed.

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: The caller rang regarding the intersection between Templeton street and Redfern drive in cook. The line of sight up Redfern street is quite limited due to trees, as well as cars being parked at the first house and the local shops.

Response: The Chief Minister said We'll get a team to go out and have a look at that, and see what we can do to appropriately trim them so as to ensure you get visibility at the intersection.

OUTCOME: A TCCS officer contacted the caller and arranged a site visit to identify the particular trees and shrubs that are causing line of sight issues. TCCS officer’s will assess whether the private shrub plantings need to be pruned or removed and have advised the caller that if removal or pruning work on private plantings is required, this will need to be conducted in consultation with the adjacent lease holder.

Issue: The caller rang regarding the Redwood Forest, just past the airport. The caller said the forest was planted in 1918 by Walter Burley Griffin and it’s an important part of Canberra History. The caller would like the forest to be better promoted.

Response: The Chief Minister said it is on the Visit Canberra website however we’ll see what we can do to better promote the forest.

OUTCOME: Bernie believes this forest is of great significance, as it was designed by Walter Burley Griffin and planted 100 years ago.
