Storm damaged cars in government parking

Released 20/01/2020

Access Canberra is aware that this afternoon’s thunderstorm and hail activity has led to a large number of damaged vehicles remaining in government-controlled car parks and roadside parking.

If your car is undrivable and clearly damaged from the storm activity and therefore remains in the parking space, we can advise that you will not be fined.

We understand that due to the number of vehicles impacted by the weather event that removal of vehicles, such as getting them towed, may take some time and an understanding approach will be taken.

We are aware that the National Capital Authority has made a similar commitment for vehicles that remain parked on national land.

It is important that owners remove any valuable items from their vehicles if they are impacted in this way.

Vehicle owners should make contact with their insurance companies to arrange the safe removal of the vehicles for repair.

For information on storm safety and emergency updates visit the Emergency Services Agency website.
