Temperatures are well and truly down, but the celebrations continue this month at Libraries ACT with the 200th birthday of Emily Bronte, NAIDOC Week and the Canberra Writers Festival in town.
Following on from a super[man]-charged June, Libraries ACT has a month of activities and events that will have you wanting to layer up and leave the house. Director of Libraries ACT, Vanessa Little, said it was an exciting month for Libraries ACT with three headlining programs.
“There is never a dull month at Libraries ACT and we’re demonstrating that with another month of programs and events for all ages and interests this July,” said Ms Little.
“July is the birthday month of classic novelist Emily Bronte. Her novel, Wuthering Heights, has divided opinion in its many years of publication, however its enduring themes keep it relevant. Join us for a panel discussion, ‘Wuthering Heights…love or not?’ on Monday 30 July at Woden Library discussing the classic.
“Monday 30 July may be Emily Bronte’s actual birthday, but we’re celebrating her 200th year early on Saturday 14 July with a performance of Kate Bush’s classic dance in Civic Square. I invite the community to dress in red and come down on Saturday morning to be involved in the interpretive dance celebration.”
NAIDOC Week is being celebrated from Sunday 8 July through to Sunday 15 July 2018 with this year’s theme being, ‘Because of Her, We Can!’. Libraries ACT is getting involved with an exhibition to be held at Woden Library throughout July.
“We’re highlighting local women of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, who have been recognised with awards for their strength, passion and contribution to their communities and our city. I encourage Canberrans to head to Woden Library and learn from this exhibition. It is a reminder of the important contribution that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have made and continue to make in our community.”
The Canberra Writers Festival isn’t taking place until 23 August 2018, however there’s an opportunity in July to check out some special preview events across Libraries ACT branches.
“Libraries ACT is teaming up with the ACT Writer’s Centre to give our community an opportunity to see a few events ahead of the Canberra Writers Festival in August. Panel topics to whet your appetite ahead of the Festival are connected to its theme of ‘Power, Politics, Passion’ and include Changing the World Through Words, Bloggers of Influence, and Gaming with Purpose.
“Also a reminder that it is nearly school holidays and we’ve still got some spots available for programs. Head to our website and have a look at the variety of activities available,” concluded Ms Little.
