Changed traffic arrangements at Belconnen intersections from tomorrow

Work to improve safety at two Belconnen intersections gets underway this week with changed traffic arrangements at the intersections of Ginninderra Drive/Tillyard Drive and Tillyard Drive/Lhotsky Street.

The intersections of Ginninderra Drive/Tillyard Drive and Tillyard Drive/Lhotksy Street are receiving upgrades, including traffic lights, to alleviate the safety concerns of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

The first stage of works will get underway tomorrow and involves removing some of the traffic islands from the intersection of Tillyard Drive/Lhotsky Street. Following the Easter and Anzac Day period, the second stage of works will commence. There will be access restrictions at both intersections during the construction period.

Location and timing of works

Stage One

Work will take place at the intersection of Tillyard Drive and Lhotsky Street to remove some of the existing traffic islands from tomorrow, Thursday 11 April 2019. This work will take approximately one week and is expected to be completed prior to the Easter long weekend (weather permitting). The following traffic restrictions will be in place as required between the hours of 7 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday:

  • no right hand turn from Tillyard Drive onto Lhotsky Street
  • no right hand turn from Lhotsky Street onto Tillyard Drive.

Please note that on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 April 2019, whilst school is still in session we will not put the closures in place until 9.30 am following morning peak.

Stage Two

Work will commence on Monday 29 April 2019 at both the intersections of Ginninderra Drive/Tillyard Drive and Tillyard Drive/Lhotsky Street. To complete these works as quickly as possible and for the safety of motorists and pedestrians, the following traffic restrictions will be in place:

  • no right hand turn from Ginninderra Drive onto Tillyard Drive
  • no left hand turn from Ginninderra Drive onto Tillyard Drive
  • no right hand turn from Tillyard Drive onto Ginninderra Drive
  • no left hand turn from Tillyard Drive onto Ginninderra Drive (this will be allowed during AM peak)
  • no right hand turn from Lhotsky Street onto Tillyard Drive.

Motorists will be detoured via Florey Drive however where possible motorists are encouraged to avoid the intersections and use alternate routes via Kerrigan Street or Spalding Street and Kingsford Smith Drive.

These works are expected to be completed by the end of August 2019 (weather permitting).

Effects on traffic

  • Delays are expected.
  • Barriers as well as warning and detour signs will be erected to alert people to the works and temporary closures.
  • Drivers are asked to be mindful of the changed traffic arrangements and adhere to the work zone speed limits.

Upgrades at the intersection of Ginninderra Drive and Tillyard Drive include:

  • traffic lights including signalised pedestrian crossing
  • additional eastbound (citybound) through lane
  • additional right turn lane from Ginninderra Drive onto Tillyard Drive
  • new pedestrian crossing and give way signage at the slip lane from Tillyard Drive onto Ginninderra Drive
  • path connections from the existing shared path on the southern side of the intersection
  • footpath connection from this intersection to the intersection of Tillyard Drive/Lhotsky Street.

Upgrades at the intersection of Tillyard Drive and Lhotsky Street include:

  • traffic lights including signalised pedestrian crossing
  • zebra crossings on both the northern and southern sides of the intersection
  • relocation of existing bus stop north of the intersection approximately 20 metres further north.
