Packing up with boxes and tape. A new home for the ACT Heritage Library takes shape.

Released 04/01/2019

The ACT Heritage Library and ArchivesACT are preparing to move to a new home and will close their doors at Woden from 4 pm tomorrow, Saturday 5 January 2019 to relocate to Fyshwick.

For a short period during January 2019, the ACT Heritage Library will be closed as the team move to a new home at 255 Canberra Avenue, Fyshwick,“ Director of Libraries ACT, Vanessa Little said.

"With its collection growing 30 per cent over the last 10 years, this move will help to address immediate needs of the physical collection.”

The ACT Heritage Library collects, stores, preserves, promotes and makes accessible documents that record the history of Canberra and lives of Canberrans at home and in the wider community. ArchivesACT performs a similar role in making ACT Government archives available to the public.

The collections are unique and irreplaceable and include newspapers, photographs, maps, diaries, books, microfilm and digital items.

The ACT Heritage Library is at 96% capacity overall at its current site. It already exceeds capacity for publications, maps and plans.

“This is an exciting time for the team moving to a new location,” Ms Little said.

“Once the ACT Heritage Library moves from Woden, there will be additional space available for community use at the Woden Library branch.”

Archives ACT, who share space at Woden with the ACT Heritage Library, will also be moving to the new site. The move presents exciting new opportunities for ArchivesACT to delve deeper into the ACT Government’s archives and make them more accessible to the community.

The ACT Heritage Library and Archives ACT will open at their new location (255 Canberra Avenue, Fyshwick) on Monday 21 January 2019.

Opening hours will be 9.30 am – 5 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am – 4 pm on Saturdays.

Parking is available. Some free parking is nearby and unmetered 2 hour parking is adjacent to 255 Canberra Avenue, Fyshwick.
