Have your say on the ACT’s new strategy for LGBTIQ inclusion

Released 05/03/2019

To enhance Canberra’s reputation as Australia’s most inclusive city, the Government wants to hear from the community on how we can ensure LGBTIQ Canberrans feel included and equal in our city.

"An inclusive city enables a diverse range of people with unique ideas and experiences to fully participate in our community and our economy," said David Momcilovic, Manager of the Office for LGBTIQ Affairs.

"We are developing a new, four year strategy which will celebrate, bolster and protect equality, diversity and inclusion. It is set to forge a new chapter in the ACT’s long history of advancing LGBTIQ rights."

"Some LGBTIQ Canberrans face multiple forms of disadvantage or barriers to participation."

"We hope that this strategy will also reflect the specific needs and aspirations of LGBTIQ Canberrans who live with disability, or come from a culturally and linguistically diverse background - we’re particularly interested in hearing from people with these experiences," Mr Momcilovic said.

On the basis of existing evidence and consultations to date, the Strategy will focus on:

  • improving LGBTIQ people’s access to services that meet their unique and intersecting needs
  • improving the awareness and understanding of the unique and intersecting needs of LGBTIQ people
  • ensuring equal legal status, recognition and treatment of LGBTIQ+ people under Territory laws and policies
  • improving the health and wellbeing of LGBTIQ people
  • increasing the participation of LGBTIQ people involvement in all areas of public life, and
  • ensuring LGBTIQ+ people are able to live their lives safely and feel safe inside and outside of their homes.

"We want to hear from all Canberrans about your views on the Strategy’s proposed priorities, if anything is missing, and your experiences of inclusion in Canberra," Mr Momcilovic said.
