Local traders to benefit from permanent removal of hawker permit fees

Released 03/06/2022

After a successful waiver of hawker permit fees to support businesses with recovery from the pandemic, the ACT Government will be permanently abolishing hawker permit fees from 1 July 2022.

Abolishing hawker permit fees will help support local family businesses across Canberra, giving them more opportunities to trade in public spaces more easily.

Minister for Business and Better Regulation Tara Cheyne said food van operators and market stall holders, both existing and new, will benefit from the abolished fees.

“The ACT Government is committed to making it easier for business owners by reducing fees wherever we can. This fee reduction will help support local family businesses and jobs across the city and in popular recreation spaces, activating different areas of our city.

“Many popular Canberra businesses have started out as food vans or market stalls, before establishing permanent business shop fronts. This fee abolishment is another way the ACT Government is removing barriers for people to start their own business,” Minister Cheyne said.

Hawker permits allow businesses to trade on public unleased land and sell a variety of items including, food and drink, flowers, art, jewellery and clothing.

Businesses will still need to apply for a hawker permit to trade on public unleased land. More information on hawker permits is available at Access Canberra.

"This is welcome and exciting news from the government - it shows a real commitment to support innovative established and emerging businesses in Canberra, as well as removing barriers so that businesses can continue to build vibrancy and community across the city.

New and established businesses will benefit from this announcement - it shows the government is listening to small business and looking for ways to make doing business easier. This will help create more opportunity to activate public places and for businesses to engage with the community across Canberra.”
