Community views sought on waste-to-energy policy

Released 04/10/2018

Local residents, industry and business are invited to co-design a waste-to-energy policy for the ACT to clearly outline the Territory’s position on energy recovery and provide a framework for assessing any future waste-to-energy proposals.

Waste-to-energy describes a process where energy and resources are retrieved from waste through processing - resulting in heat, electricity or fuel.

The development of a waste-to-energy policy for the ACT was one of 18 recommendations of the Waste Feasibility Study roadmap released in May 2018.

“We want our community and industry to be partners in co-designing a long-term, informed and evidence based policy vision for waste-to-energy in the ACT that explores its benefits and challenges,” said Minister for City Services Chris Steel.

“It’s important that the community considers each of the range of waste-to-energy technologies available and their future in the ACT. This doesn’t just include waste incineration plants – but also other waste to energy technology like anaerobic digestion, which is an advanced form of composting.

“The ACT Government doesn’t currently have a policy on waste-to-energy and we want to hear from the community before forming a position.”

Minister Steel said interest from both the community and industry means there is a need for a clear policy on waste-to-energy similar to other jurisdictions in Australia including Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia.

“A policy will provide certainty for industry and residents about what waste-to-energy infrastructure and technology will be a good fit for the ACT and the region and what won’t be supported. An evidence based policy with community buy-in will help to protect our environment, realise social benefits and grow our economy in the long term.

“Expressions of interest are now open for participation in focus groups, or you can complete a survey online at www.yoursay.act.gov.au or in hard copy at ACT public library branches to inform the policy’s development.”

Consultation closes 27 November 2018.
