Branch out this tree week

Released 03/05/2019

The ACT Government is encouraging Canberrans to participate in tree week, a celebration of our native trees and their place in our beloved bush capital.

Minister for City Services Chris Steel today officially launched the sixth annual Canberra Tree Week at the Ainslie Scout Hall.

“Tree Week is a great annual event where Canberrans can celebrate the trees, urban forests, national park and nature reserves that provide the character of our bush capital,” Minister Steel said.

“During this week there will be a series of events run by the Government and community organisations including guided walks, tree climbing championships, kite making and story time at Libraries ACT.”

The Minister was joined at the launch by Tyronne Bell, a Ngunawal descendant, who shared the importance of trees to his country, culture and the traditional custodians of this land.

“Many of the trees across Canberra have been part of the rich Aboriginal heritage of the Capital region, not just the scar trees but also trees with a spiritual importance,” Minister Steel said.

“The ACT Government manages 760,000 trees on unleased land including over 370 different species in one of Australia’s most impressive urban forests.

“Trees will have an even greater role in our lives, helping us to adapt to climate change, and the ACT Government is continuing our work on living infrastructure plan and more tree plantings to maintain the character of the bush capital.”

“Canberra Tree Week is a great chance to celebrate our trees, and I encourage all Canberrans to either get involved in one of the many great events on during the week, or to just take a moment to appreciate how lucky we are to have such an extensive urban forest.”

Canberra Tree Week runs from Saturday 4 May to Sunday 12 May 2019.
