City improvement works re-invigorate Sydney and Melbourne Buildings

The ACT Government has completed works to re-invigorate the precinct around Canberra’s iconic Sydney and Melbourne Buildings to make the centre of our city more attractive, safer and easier to get around.

Minister for City Services Chris Steel said the recently completed works have reclaimed a section of the road verge on Northbourne Avenue and opened it up to pedestrians. The upgrades also include seating, lighting, a new raised cycle path and opportunities for outdoor dining, along with new landscaping to improve the overall look and feel of the area.

“This is the most significant improvement work conducted on the Sydney and Melbourne Building precinct for a long time and we hope all Canberrans will enjoy our revitalised city centre,” Minister Steel said.

“The Sydney and Melbourne buildings are an area of significant heritage for our city. These upgrades represent a substantial upgrade to the heart of our city.

“These improvements to the Northbourne Avenue verges are complemented by the newly completed Alinga Street bus station expansion and the soon to open Alinga Street light rail stop.

“We are delivering an integrated transport network supported by an expanded interchange in the City for pedestrians, cyclists as well as bus and light rail commuters. The work we have done on the Northbourne verges will improve access in the area and complement these new integrated transport facilities. Works to enhance the large median strip between the buildings are now complete with the addition of new plants and flowers as well as new seating.

Minister Steel said that the works will also provide new opportunities for local businesses to make use of this great space. The improvements will create a vibrant community feel in the centre of our city. It will be easier for people to move around and enjoy the new public space while making the area attractive for businesses.

“We want to thank local businesses and those who work and live in the area for their patience during the construction.”

The City Renewal Authority welcomes the public space upgrades near these important Canberra landmarks and will continue to work with stakeholders to further drive the revitalisation of the Sydney and Melbourne buildings and bring the area to life.

The authority has arranged for the iconic buildings to feature in Enlighten this year, for the first time.

The facades along Northbourne Avenue will be illuminated by the artwork of local artist Hannah Quinlivan, which also features in glass panels of the new light rail stations.

Local bars and restaurants are being encouraged to use the newly refurbished verges, as well as outdoor seating provided by the City Renewal Authority, while the illuminations are in place.
