Government fast tracks Tuggers laneways project

Released 26/11/2019

Tuggeranong residents will be able to enjoy a vibrant, safer, and more accessible town centre sooner with the rerouting of buses from Anketell Street, and upgrades to the laneways to the lake brought forward.

“The Government is bringing forward the upgrades to the Tuggeranong Laneways precinct with work starting as early as January next year,” Minister for City Services Chris Steel said.

Final designs for the project have been released for the upgraded laneways from Lake Tuggeranong to Anketell Street and tender for construction is now open.

“During consultation, Tuggeranong residents told us they wanted clear views from Anketell Street to the lake, level spaces for activities and better pedestrian access.”

“We hope this new space will see more activity in the upgraded laneways and construction will be complete ahead of schedule for next year’s SouthFest.”

The renewed space will be more accessible, safer, and inviting, and will help bring more commercial activity to the Town Centre.

The works will include 40 new deciduous trees, improved pavement levels for walkers and cyclists, seating and shade structures, water permeable paving around trees, raingardens, and irrigated grass near the lakeshore.

The designs include raingardens which will help to both soften the space and capture water to prevent nutrient run-off into our waterways.

The new design increases the space available for outdoor dining, allows for events and provides better views and improved access for walkers and cyclists.

Minister Steel also announced that buses would be removed from Anketell Street followed the completion of the Anketell Street upgrades earlier this year and feedback from local residents and businesses.

“The community made it clear they wanted to see buses taken off Anketell Street so they could enjoy their newly upgraded main street with a cleaner and quieter environment, with more options for business to expand their outdoor dining facilities,” Minister Steel said.

“The Government has listened to the community and I am pleased to announce we will be rerouting buses off Anketell Street.”

Buses will now travel into the interchange via Soward Drive, turn right along Athllon Drive, take the signalised right onto Anketell Street and into the interchange, with new bus stops being added on Athllon Drive. This will make our public transport network more accessible including for the thousands of public servants who work on Athllon Drive.

“The changes to bus routes currently using Anketell Street will come into effect in April next year. This will help reduce heavy vehicle traffic along both Anketell Street and Cowlishaw Street, and make Tuggeranong’s main street a better place for people.”

“These upgrades form just one part of the ACT Government’s plan for Tuggeranong, revitalising the Town Centre.”
