Canberrans can rely on weekend buses to get them around our city with reliability increasing to almost 100% for the last four weekends.
The first Transport Action Plan Quarterly Update released today shows the interim updated weekend timetable has taken real steps to ensure that Canberrans have a reliable public transport network.
“I am very pleased that as a result of our interim updated weekend timetable, Transport Canberra has met its reliability target on three of the four weekends, with reliability at 99.8% on these weekends,” Minister Steel said.
“Over 150,000 journeys were recorded over the past four weekends which is approximately 27,000 more than in the same period last year.
“Weekend reliability earlier in the year was not hitting the mark. It’s great to see more Canberrans catching the bus on the weekend confident that their service will arrive.”
To ensure that we are meeting community expectations on weekend services, the Government released the Transport Action Plan last month that sets out ten actions to improve weekend bus reliability.
Work has commenced on nine of the ten actions, with two of the actions already being completed: the introduction of a revised weekend bus timetable, and having six standby drivers being available at each of the bus depots.
Recruiting and training more bus drivers is another key action to deliver improved weekend reliability and Transport Canberra has made real progress in stepping up the recruitment of drivers.
“It’s great to see so many enthusiastic people wanting to become a bus driver. Since the new network began, 58 new drivers have started with a further ten currently in training,” Minister Steel said.
The community will be updated regularly on the progress of the Transport Action Plan with quarterly updates. Today’s document is the first quarterly update under the Plan and is published on the Transport Canberra website at www.transport.act.gov.au.
