Next stage of Denman Prospect approved

Released 28/02/2024

The next stage of Denman Prospect has been approved - securing 1000 new homes to support our growing city.

ACT Planning Minister, Chris Steel MLA, called-in the Estate Development Plan for Denman Prospect 2, also known as ‘Stromlo Reach’, and approved the application with conditions.

“This new residential estate will provide more housing supply for our growing population including more affordable housing,” said Minister for Planning Chris Steel.

“Our priority is increasing housing supply and providing more housing options for Canberrans across all districts. The decision I have made will enable more housing and more affordable housing to be built as soon as possible.

“Stromlo Reach will provide around 1000 new homes at a time when we need more housing to support our rapidly growing population."

Stromlo Reach includes 295 new single dwelling residential blocks and 15 multi-unit sites to accommodate approximately 839 dwellings. Around 20 per cent of the new dwellings will be affordable housing.

“The proposal also includes 14 open space blocks for community recreation, community facilities, transport services and land to deliver a new school for the area,” said Minister Steel.

“Following planning work undertaken to develop the District Strategy for the Molonglo Valley, the district is now set to grow to more than 70,000 people by 2050. This approval will ensure we continue to provide adequate housing for those who wish to call the Molonglo Valley home.

“Within the decision today are a range of conditions that the developer must adhere to. These cover a wide range of requirements but are focused on the environmental impacts of the development including those related to the Pink-Tailed Worm-Lizard, burrowing animals such as wombats, creek and water connectivity and tree replacement.

“I am confident that with these conditions, this approval strikes right balance between providing homes for our growing population, whilst considering our natural environment and local heritage.”

“Separately, I have also requested advice about the next steps in protecting adjacent blocks 402 and 403 Stromlo, as well as the remainder of Block 12, Section 1, Denman Prospect from future development.

“I have also listened to the views of the community about Coombs Peninsula, and have sought advice about how this could be incorporated in the Molonglo River Nature Reserve, or as public open space.”

The development application at Stromlo Reach was publicly notified between 19 July 2023 and 9 August 2023, with further notification from 20 September 2023 till 19 October 2023 and received a total of 12 representations from the community.

Today’s decision was made using call in powers under the Planning and Development Act 2007. For more information on the Development Application please visit the ACT Planning website.
