The Gungahlin Town Centre Planning Refresh has been issued today to guide the growth and development of the town centre in the coming years.
The town centre has been growing significantly in recent years, with new residential and commercial developments as well as the light rail getting underway soon.
This growth is set to continue. By 2028 the population of the Gungahlin district is expected to be about 106,000 people – 31,000 more people than now. The town centre will see much of this growth, both in number of residents as well as employment and economic activity.
This growth is already being catered for with significant ACT Government funded upgrades to infrastructure, including Light Rail Stage 1, major road duplications and delivering a new shared zone on Hibberson Street. But the strong growth also meant we needed to review the planning approach to the town centre to ensure it can cater for it.
The Gungahlin Town Centre Planning Refresh updates the planning controls in the town centre - like building heights and the location of residential uses - as well as proposals for public spaces and active travel improvements for the town centre.
In finalising the Refresh recommendations, the ACT Government has considered community and industry feedback, including comments on building heights and character, upgrades to public spaces and improvements to active travel networks.
In addition to the release of the Gungahlin Town Centre Planning Refresh showing the planning considerations, analysis and recommendations, today I am also issuing an engagement report that provides a summary of community input and comments that the Government heard throughout the process.
The Refresh also includes a concept variation to the Gungahlin Precinct Map and Code, highlighting how the recommendations are intended to be given effect. This will be followed in 2019 by the release of a draft variation to the Territory Plan to formally give effect to the Refresh recommendations.
