ACT well prepared for an emergency

Released 06/11/2019

The ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) is well equipped and prepared for an emergency this summer and has been working to help ensure the Canberran community is ready.

We have led a range of activities to provide the ACT community with tips and skills on how to be prepared in emergencies including bushfires, house fires, storms and health emergencies.

At the start of the bushfire season, ESA partnered with the ABC for a full day of broadcasting raising bushfire awareness reaching thousands of ACT residents across TV, social media and radio.

Bushfire survival plans have been provided to all Canberra households and I encourage everyone to take the time to complete them.

I launched the Be Storm Ready campaign in September providing Canberrans steps to prepare their homes to reduce damage during strong winds, heavy rain and flooding.

On Restart a Heart Day 2019, ACT Ambulance Service participated in the Government House Open Day with a stall providing information on CPR and Automated external defibrillator use.

ESA also worked with ACT Policing to provide the community with basic CPR and defibrillator training at education sessions at Westfield Woden and Westfield Belconnen.

We held Community Fire Unit (CFU) Saturday on 12 October and have received over 232 expressions of interest from Canberrans who live in bushfire prone suburbs to join their local CFU.

I released our latest Strategic Bushfire Management plan at the start October, which outlines how the ACT is more prepared than ever.

ESA and ACT Parks and Conservation Service has deployed a total of 130 service personnel to assist fires burning in Northern New South Wales and Queensland.

Our local emergency services personnel have assisted our fellow Australians during a time of need while gaining invaluable on-the-job experience in the leadup to the ACT bushfire season.

I thank all staff and volunteers of the ESA for their support in keeping Canberra safe and helping the community prepare for emergencies.
