Awards to recognise Emergency Services volunteers

Released 24/10/2019

Volunteers from the ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) and Mapping and Planning Support (MAPS) are being formally acknowledged for helping to keep the Canberra community safe.

Our volunteers support the ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) to protect life, property and the environment in the ACT during storms, floods, fires and other emergency situations.

I thank them for contributing their valuable time to help our community.

We are recognising members’ contributions through length of service, outstanding actions or achievements where they have exceeded expectations.

The awards ceremony also acknowledges the businesses and employers that support ESA volunteers in their role.

ACTSES plays a vital role assisting Canberrans during emergencies and currently has more than 355 active, trained volunteers.

MAPS volunteers provide situational awareness for emergencies using mapping technologies and have become a key capability in the ESA since being established 11 years ago.

They are spatial information professionals who have worked on a volunteer basis to support the Canberra community for more than a decade.

Media are welcome to attend the ceremony this evening.
