Joint Media Release Yvette Berry  MLA and Rachel Stephen-Smith MLA

One of Canberra’s most respected and longest-serving ACT public servants, Nic Manikis PSM, retires today after almost 40 years of service to our community.

Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry and Minister for Multicultural Affairs Rachel Stephen-Smith have thanked
Mr Manikis for his service to the ACT.

“Nic has devoted his career to work that celebrates our diversity and supports to those who need it,” Ms Berry said.

“Nic’s commitment has been matched by his compassion for the community and countless local organisations have benefited from his support.”

Nic Manikis has been in the ACT Public Service since the start of self-government in 1989 and had previously worked in the Commonwealth Government’s Australian Capital Territory Administration.

The quality and value of Mr Manikis’ work was recognised with Public Service Medal in 1998.

“In multicultural affairs, Nic’s achievements have changed the face of Canberra.  The most obvious is the establishment of the National Multicultural Festival.  But Nic has also worked with successive governments to create programs that assist migrants seeking to gain a foothold in employment, for example the Work Experience and Support Program (WESP) and the introduction of the ACT Services Access Card for asylum seekers.” Ms Stephen-Smith said.

“As a former head of the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Nic supported the establishment of the United Ngunnawal Elders Council and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body.”

“Nic Manikis also oversaw the introduction of the ACT Seniors Card and after the 2003 Canberra bushfires he coordinated a program of more than 80 events and activities that saw more than $9.5 million collected in donations to support affected residents.”

“This is a legacy that will be long remembered.  We wish Nic all the best for the next stage of his life and look forward to seeing him as an honoured gust at future events” said Ms Berry.
