Canberra Health Services staff and medical students were tonight congratulated for their innovation and commitment to providing quality health care to Canberrans.
The 2019 Quality in Healthcare awards acknowledge the contribution of teams and individuals who aim to deliver safe, effective and person-centred health care across the ACT.
Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the winners for 2019 were an example of the experienced, professional and caring health professionals who work in our public health system.
“These awards highlight how the patient is at the forefront of the minds of clinical and health sector staff. Each project aims to create a safer, more comfortable environment for the patient.
“Our public health system is backed by health professionals who are determined to find better, smarter and more efficient ways to create a high-quality health care system and these awards acknowledge that dedication,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.
“Congratulations to all the finalists and thank you all for the work you do to enhance patient-centred health care in the ACT.
“I would especially like to congratulate the Quality Improvement team from Canberra Health Services and the University of Canberra, who took out the top prize for their work on hospital-acquired infections,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.
Background on the overall winner’s project, Quality Improvement Team, Canberra Health Services:
This team focussed on urinary tract infections that occur during a patient’s stay in hospital. These infections account for the second highest proportion of major hospital acquired infections at Canberra Health Services in 2017, particularly in rehabilitation wards.
By developing an effective clinical policy and procedures for maintaining catheters, combined with specific nurse education, this team has delivered results to reduce the rate of infections in rehabilitation.
The categories for the Awards covered five key quality areas: person-centred care, safety, effectiveness, efficiency and the best student and the winners are:
- Person Centred: Maternity and Gynaecology Unit, Canberra Health Services: Childbirth classes in languages other than English to increase attendance of non-English speaking women Project.
- Safety: Quality Improvement Team, Canberra Health Services: Reducing the incidence of Hospital Acquired Urinary Tract Infections in Rehabilitation at Canberra Health Services Project.
- Effectiveness: Acute Allied Health Services, Canberra Health Services: MOVE IT PROGRAM: keeping cancer patients moving improves their hospital experience.
- Efficiency Acute Allied Health Services, Canberra Health Services: Back on Track - Spinal Pain Service - Helping Individuals and Specialist Services to Manage Spinal Pain.
- Student: Olivia Padley, Medical Student, Australian National University: Implementation of the Newborn Sepsis Calculator in an Australian Maternity and Tertiary Neonatal Department.
- Overall: Quality Improvement Team, Canberra Health Services: Reducing the incidence of Hospital Acquired Urinary Tract Infections in Rehabilitation at Canberra Health Services Project.
