The Government’s road safety reforms are keeping people safer and contributing to the Territory’s low road toll.
Minister for Road Safety Shane Rattenbury today released the 2018 Road Safety Report Card, which shows that the implementation of recent road safety reforms has achieved a reduction in the number of fatalities on ACT roads.
With three years to go under the ACT Road Safety Strategy, 61 commitments have already been completed and with another 21 well advanced or progressing well.
Among its recent road safety reforms, the Government has:
- expanded the number of mobile road safety camera sites, with 356 new sites added to the program;
- assessed all identified school zones to ensure our mobile speed vans can be at as many locations as possible;
- funded the 2017 ACT Road Safety Community Grants program, with seven successful applicants sharing in $320,000 to deliver training, education and awareness programs;
- recently funded a $50,000 motorcycle skills program for learner and provisional drivers;
- opened two learn to ride centres for young Canberrans;
- built awareness about ANCAP safety ratings on cars for younger and older drivers;
- promoted how everyone can safely share the road with buses through the ‘Share the Road’ campaign.
Mr Rattenbury said the Government would be continuing to work over the coming year on a number of new initiatives identified in the ACT Road Safety Strategy.
“In the coming months, we will be talking with community about reforms to learner and provisional licenses which have been proven in other jurisdictions to significantly reduce the prevalence and severity of road trauma involving our youth,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“The number of deaths on our roads per capita remains lower than the national average but work must continue to ensure that the number of road deaths reaches, and is maintained, at zero.
“We as a community should not have to endure the heartbreak associated with road trauma, but to avoid it we must share the responsibility for road safety and all strive for Vision Zero.
“Vision Zero can be summarised simply: no loss of life on our roads is acceptable.
“Every time you speed you increase the risk of death and injury to yourself and others, so cameras are an important part of our road safety initiatives to reaffirm to drivers the speed limit is not a guide - it is the limit.”
