Award winning public housing

Released 17/08/2018

The ACT Government’s leadership and innovation has been recognised with an urban development award to celebrate the delivery of the significant program of public housing renewal and social infrastructure across the ACT.

The government’s Public Housing Renewal Program has been named a winner at the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) NSW Awards for Excellence held in Sydney last week, taking out the Social Infrastructure category.

The Public Housing Renewal Program is making a real difference in improving the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in our community and this award recognises the government’s commitment to urban renewal and improving social outcomes for public housing tenants in Canberra.

Canberra has a proud history of public housing and I am committed to supporting people to not only have accommodation, but to have a home that meets their needs, now and into the future.

This award is also a strong endorsement of the public housing renewal taskforce’s significant expertise in delivering new quality properties.

The Public Housing Renewal Program is replacing 1,288 of the territory’s oldest and most concentrated public housing dwellings with modern, energy efficient homes that suits the contemporary needs of tenants and achieves good social mix.

To date, the government has relocated 649 tenancies through the Public Housing Renewal Program resulting in 876 people moving into their new homes.

The old multi-unit sites are being progressively sold to market for redevelopment which will allow more people to live close to work, schools, businesses and public transport corridors.
