Statistics show success and further studies after school

Released 15/04/2019

Today I have released the ACT Post School Destinations and Pathways in 2018 report, which shows that 93 per cent of young people who graduated in 2017 were employed or undertaking further study in 2018, or both.

The report summarises the work and study status of the 2017 Year 12 graduates and school leavers:

  • 93 per cent of 2017 graduates were employed or studying in 2018 which is higher than the national rate of 87 per cent.
  • 59 percent of 2017 graduates were studying in 2018 and a further 29 percent intended to start some study in the next two years.
  • 46 percent of 2017 school leavers were studying in 2018 and a further 28 percent intended to start some study in the next two years.
  • 77 per cent of those who graduated in 2017 employed in 2018, compared with 64 percent of 2017 school leavers.

The ACT Government is committed to providing every child and young person with a great education and, in turn, the positive life experiences that flow from that. All the work that goes into education and more broadly, youth work and support work, is about setting up young people for success after school.

School leaders, teachers and support staff work every day to equip students for success when they leave school. This support was appreciated by those who graduated, with 85 per cent reporting that they found Year 11 and 12 worthwhile.

The value of completing an ACT Senior Secondary Certificate was highlighted by the longer-term data. The results from a longitudinal survey of 2015 Year 12 graduates and school leavers show that, on average, young people who complete Year 12 have more positive employment and study outcomes in the first two years after leaving school.

The ACT Government’s commitment to high quality education, focused on meeting young people’s needs, will continue to be delivered in 2019.
