ACT public school teachers highest paid in the country

Released 03/07/2020

The ACT Government values its children and the indispensable contribution that school education makes to every child and their life outcomes.

Teachers are the single most important factor to secure good educational outcomes for students.

The value of teachers and school staff has never been more evident than through this COVID-19 pandemic. The community has gained a greater respect and understanding of the role of teachers.

School leaders, teachers and staff have gone above and beyond to continue to provide excellent education to our children. They have provided consistency, safety and have ensured the wellbeing of their students.

The ACT Government celebrates teachers in both the government and non-government sectors.

The ACT Government is committed to attracting and nurturing a workforce of teachers that support learning across our public schools to ensure good life outcomes for students.

Public school teachers in the ACT are well represented by their union, the Australian Education Union and as a result of effective workplace bargaining, ACT public school teachers will remain the highest paid in the country.

On July 9, when the latest pay rise in the Teaching Staff Enterprise Agreement comes into effect the top of range classroom teacher salary will reach $109,641.

By 1 October 2020 superannuation contributions will increase to 11.5% for teachers and school leaders on the Superannuation Guarantee Funds. The offer will also extend paid employer superannuation contributions on the first 12 months of unpaid birth leave, bonding leave, primary care giver leave, adoption and permanent care leave.

A reduction in face to face teaching hours is also ensuring on-going professional development for teachers and quality learning for students across the ACT, further supported by an agreed class sizes policy.

The ACT Government through the Education Directorate is currently undergoing a national recruitment drive. To date, over 160 applications have been received, 60 per cent of which are new applicants. This is a great outcome with applicants from interstate, new graduates and the non-government sector.
