CatholicCare will manage 33 community housing properties in Kaleen

Released 25/06/2020

The ACT Government has appointed CatholicCare to manage 33 affordable rental properties in Kaleen as part of the government's 66-unit 'Toolangi' development.

Through the ACT Government's 10 year ACT Housing Strategy, the government committed to delivering more sustainable housing solutions for community members most in need.

Toolangi in Kaleen delivers on this commitment and is an example of a quality mixed-tenure, socially-inclusive housing options that consider the needs of tenants while supporting the growth of the ACT's community housing sector.

The Toolangi complex comprises 33 public housing properties integrated with 33 affordable rental properties to deliver a purpose-built, socially inclusive development.

Toolangi is already home to many public housing tenants, delivered as part of the ACT Government's ongoing commitment to growing and renewing public housing to provide more choice in homes that better meet the diverse needs and abilities of tenants.

All 66 two-bedroom units are built to Class C adaptable building standards and each building includes lifts and fully automated doors. Further significant modifications have been made to some of the public housing units to better meet individual tenant needs to ensure they are supported to age in place.

Following a tender process, CatholicCare has been appointed to manage the remaining 33 units as community housing.

CatholicCare will focus on creating an inclusive and sustainable community and will provide management services, wrap around supports for the residents, and property maintenance services.

Minister for Housing and Suburban Development, Yvette Berry, said "Toolangi was purposefully designed to bring residents together to create a sense of community and increase social participation, including a community garden area. A community development program will also be created to bring the residents together to build a strong, socially inclusive community.

"This is a great outcome for tenants, as well with flexible living arrangements and close to shops, services and transport and I look forward to seeing this community grow and come together," Minister Berry said.
