The ACT Government is committed to supporting women and girls to participate in sport at all levels and ensuring that facilities are designed appropriately is an important part of that commitment. Through the fast track projects, three pavilions around Canberra will receive upgrades to their changerooms.
Work commences this week at Amaroo District Playing Fields, Wanniassa District Playing Fields, and Deakin District Playing Fields, bringing three more community changerooms into line with the ACT Government’s Female Friendly Change Rooms @ Sporting Facilities guidelines.
Aligning with the guidelines, the upgrades mean that the facilities now provide a welcoming space for all athletes and include:
- lockable shower cubicles
- power points for accessories adjacent to wet areas
- individual toilet cubicles
- privacy considerations
- shelving in appropriate locations for personal accessories.
The work is being undertaken as part of the ACT Government’s fast track infrastructure program, which is keeping Canberrans employed and supporting local business through COVID-19.
This $200,000 fast track project has so far engaged nine contractors across the three pavilions. This figure is expected to rise as projects move further through construction.
The ACT has the highest sport and recreation participation rates in the country and is a leader in women’s sport across elite, semi-professional and community levels. The ACT Government is committed to reducing barriers to participation for women and girls in sport and recreation.
Since 2016, over $1.1 million has been allocated to upgrading 16 sporting and recreation facilities across the territory to ensure they include female friendly additions.
Improving facilities and changing rooms is part of a range of measures being undertaken by the ACT Government to support women in sport.
These latest upgrades join a long list of infrastructure and maintenance works already announced as part of the Fast Track program. All works are scheduled for completion by the end of June 2020.
