‘Country as Teacher’ research through Affiliated Schools

Released 07/05/2021

Lake Tuggeranong College has embarked on a research project on ‘Country as Teacher’ through the Affiliated Schools partnership between the Education Directorate and the University of Canberra.

The ACT Government has provided $2 million for joint research projects between the University of Canberra and the Education Directorate. The first four projects were commissioned late last year.

The ‘Country as Teacher’ research project is engaging teachers and students with time on Country to sit and be present, as an introduction to Indigenous ways of being and knowing. Teachers have journaled their experiences of being on Country and their connections to place.

Teachers spoke about their time on Country during a yarning circle led by researcher Ben Wilson. It was a privilege to participate in the yarning circle and hear teachers speak passionately about the ways in which they have connected with Country and learned about and from the local environment.

In the next phase of the research, teachers will investigate how they can bring these experiences to their students, so that they may also learn from, with and through Country.

The other three projects are:

  • Early years transitions into school
  • Digital Pedagogies
  • Personalised Wellbeing

More research projects will be commissioned throughout 2021.

The Affiliated Schools Program is a unique collaborative partnership between the University of Canberra and the Education Directorate.

It is a key initiative of the Future of Education Strategy and aims to improve student learning outcomes through a shared commitment to pre-service teacher education, teacher and school leader professional development, collaborative research, and school improvement.
