Work begins on sustainable house precinct in the Molonglo Valley

Released 28/02/2024

Construction is starting on the ACT Government’s North Wright sustainable house precinct.

Comprising a total of 43 townhouses, the project aims to showcase a range of sustainable, accessible and affordable housing initiatives.

As part of the Government’s work to encourage more medium density development, the townhouses will offer Canberrans a sustainable, low cost, high amenity form of housing.

Cultivating a sense of community and inclusivity is a priority for the Government throughout this project. Encouraging community bonding through shared public spaces, the precinct will feature greened laneways, plenty of public seating and facilities for outdoor play.

Minister for Housing and Suburban Development Yvette Berry celebrated the occasion with a ceremonial tree planting, the first of 250.

“I am excited to see that construction of this exciting new sustainable housing development is starting. This project shows the ACT Government’s commitment to affordable and sustainable housing options for Canberrans," Minister Berry said.

The project will ultimately deliver 43 climate-wise., net zero townhouses on compact blocks sized 200m² to 250m². A number of sustainability features will ensure each dwelling has an energy efficiency of 7 to 8.6 Stars.

“In this first stage, a total of 23 fully landscaped, energy-efficient courtyard homes will be offered to the Canberra community as an entry-level sustainable house and land package,” Minister Berry said.

Design for the remaining 20 townhouses in Stage 2 is starting soon. These townhouses will aim to demonstrate Passive House design standards, prefabrication and a minimum of 8 Star energy efficiency.
